Applied Photography 1

13 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials, 26 hours practicals. Semester 1.

Available to Bachelor of Photography students.

Students completing this subject will learn and explore both theory and practice in the following broad areas of photography: photojournalism including sport photography; fine art photography including photomontage/collage techniques.

Experimentation while striving for excellence will be encouraged. Students will make use of the most appropriate types of equipment and materials and will complete both colour printing and advanced black and white processing and printing.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop an understanding of the principles and practices of each of the two areas listed above;
  2. achieve near professional competency in the use of camera and lighting equipment;
  3. achieve near professional standards in the production of both colour and black and white prints;
  4. apply previously acquired knowledge of photographic and darkroom techniques to new tasks and explore experimental alternatives in the quest for originality and creative excellence.

Assessment by two practical assignments (60%); folio of photographs (20%); journal detailing folio conception and progress (10%); tutorial attendance and participation (10%).
