Introduction to Underwater Photography

66 contact hours. July block mode.

Available to all students with basic open water diving certificate; minimum 15 hours logged diving time; inclusion on the JCU Dive Register and current AS2299 Dive Medical Certificate.

This subject provides students with an introduction to or revision of the basic theory and techniques of photography followed by a detailed introduction to the field of underwater still photography using scuba equipment and both digital and conventional camera equipment. It combines a comprehensive coverage of the use of the equipment, materials and techniques of underwater photography with a thorough grounding in applicable workplace health and safety concerns and procedures. Students will also be instructed in the proper care and maintenance of the equipment used. Field work on the Great Barrier Reef and Orpheus Island is a compulsory component of this subject and additional costs apply.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain/consolidate a sound understanding of the basic theory and practice of photography using 35mm camera equipment;
  2. choose and effectively utilise appropriate equipment and materials for underwater still photography;
  3. gain a thorough understanding of the principles governing the proper use, care and maintenance of underwater photographic equipment;
  4. gain a thorough understanding of the nature and manipulation of both natural and artificial light in underwater photography;
  5. gain a thorough understanding of the application of workplace health and safety concerns in underwater photography;
  6. control the composition and colour/tone of images through correct use of a variety of equipment and materials;
  7. develop basic competency in producing still images underwater that are relevant to the student’s specific discipline/career/interest area.

Assessment by examination (25%) and three practical assignments (75%).
