Creating Music 3A

Students will gain an appreciation of film music from the 1930s through to the present and an understanding of the various functions of music in film. This subject concludes the previous studies in orchestration, with the arrangement of musical themes for large ensemble. Students will develop practical skills in music creation in a weekly workshop and especially through collaborations with visual arts students.
Learning Objectives:
- gain an understanding of techniques used in the composition of film music;
- gain an understanding of techniques used in the orchestration and arrangement of music for film;
- gain a practical knowledge of composing music for film through the development of multi-media works.
Assessment by composition project: portfolio (50%), arrangement (20%); analysis (written analysis) (15%); examination (15%).
