Creating Music 1B

Available to BMus and BEd students who have passed the music rudiments test.

Students will continue their ongoing study of tonal music theory and composition techniques and will undertake a study of contemporary music songwriting. Further studies in orchestration and arrangement are undertaken with a focus on Western wind instruments, along with further studies in the techniques of music analysis. They will develop their practical skills in music creation in a weekly workshop and develop further skills in composition and recording with music technology and are required to participate in the University Choir.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of techniques used in tonal music composition and anlaysis;
  2. gain an understanding of contemporary songwriting techniques and analysis;
  3. gain a knowledge of western wind instruments and the manner in which music is composed and arranged for winds;
  4. gain a practical knowledge of advanced hardware and software systems used in music technology.

Assessment of theory/composition and orchestration component by tonal theory worksheets and examination (18%); composition portfolio, examination and analysis (27%); orchestration arrangement and worksheets (12%); attendance/participation (3%). Assessment of technology component by recorded work (15%); electronic works (10%); log book (5%); attendance/participation (10%).
