Creating Music 1A

26 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials, 13 hours workshops. Semester 1.

Available to BMus students and BEd students who have passed the music rudiments test.

Students will begin an ongoing exploration of tonal music theory and composition, techniques of 20th century composition, orchestration and arrangement for string instruments and techniques of anlaysis. In a weekly workshop, students will develop practical skills in composition, arrangement and analysis. Students are required to develop skills in the field of music technology and undertake an intensive course of study in computer-assisted composition and recording and are required to participate in the University Choir.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of techniques used in tonal music composition and analysis;
  2. gain an understanding of 20th century composition techniques and analysis;
  3. gain a knowledge of western string instruments and the manner in which music is composed and arranged for strings;
  4. gain a practical knowledge of the primary hardware and software systems used in music technology.

Assessment of theory/composition and orchestration component by tonal theory worksheets and examination (18%); composition portfolio, examination and analysis (27%); orchestration arrangement and worksheets (12%); attendance/participation (3%). Assessment of technology component by recorded work (15%); electronic work (10%); log book (5%); attendance/participation (10%).
