The subject is designed particularly for students with limited musical experience. Not available to BMus students.
This subject provides a birds-eye view of the plethora of music in western society over the last thousand years. The interface between popular and art styles is investigated, although there is a focus on art music. The subject surveys changes in musical styles in terms of parallel developments in broader artistic, socio-economic, political and intellectual contexts. There is a focus on listening and recognition with the purpose of acquiring skills in discrimination between musical styles of different historical periods.
Learning Objectives:
- students will have acquired a basic knowledge of the history of music, enabling them to place it in perspective to other art forms e.g. painting and architecture.
Assessment by written assignments (40%); two tests (30% each).
