Legal and Social Issues in Human Resource Management

This subject provides the student with expertise in major social and legal issues facing contemporary personnel/human resource (PHR) managers, including equal employment opportunity, affirmative action, sexual harassment and occupational safety and health. Students will learn how to deal with issues with legal and ethical actions and policies.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understand all national and Queensland laws governing employment discrimination as well as safety and health;
  2. knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of testing employees and job applicants for illegal drugs;
  3. ability to develop a sexual harassment prevention policy and program;
  4. knowledge of how and when to accommodate employee disabilities;
  5. understand employer and employee rights with respect to privacy of information.

Assessment by on-course assessment (20%); mid-term test (40%); final examination (40%).
