Staff: Dr D Lee-Ross.

This subject compares the theoretical and applied perspectives of significant human resource management and employment relations matters between countries. It focuses on human resource management practices and issues within national and global organisations, the role of national and regional socio-cultural forces and the importance of labour organisations, such as trade unions. The subject uses a thematic approach to highlight the differences and similarities between a number of countries, usually chosen from Australia, UK, USA, Europe and Asia. International Human Resource Management allows the application of previously acquired HRM knowledge to a number of ‘new’ and dynamic contexts by examining employment relationships in different countries.

Learning Objectives:

  1. competently undertake comparative inter-country human resource analyses;
  2. recognise, identify and understand the complex issues involved in comparative studies of HRM issues in a number of different countries;
  3. appreciate and understand the significant impact of political and cultural environments upon the management of human resources between countries.

Assessment by case study analysis (30%); policy report (30%); extended essay (40%).
