Concepts and applications of finite element methods. principles of concurrent engineering solid modelling. Development of equilibrium equations for quasistatic problems. Stationary principles. Weighted residual methods. Description of element types. Topics in structural mechanics including multi-disciplinary applications. Modelling strategy. An introduction to non-linear methods.
Learning Objectives:
- to provide students with a modern perspective on concurrent engineering;
- to introduce students to fundamental and practical concepts in finite element methods;
- to improve communication skills oral and written through assessable group and individual project work and presentations.
Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
