Principles of Criminal Law A

Available to all level 1 students although a quota applies and preference will be given to LLB students.

Principles of criminal responsibility; aims of the criminal law; criminal procedure including the classification of offences; jurisdiction; bail; summary proceedings; trial of indictable offences; appeals; homicide; causation; partial defences.

Learning Objectives:

  1. teach the essentials of criminal procedure;
  2. introduce the tools of analysis used in criminal law;
  3. examine the basis of criminal responsibility;
  4. attain familiarity with the offence of homicide and related defences.

Assessment by final examination (70%); assignment (20%); tutorial participation (10%) (subject to variation).
