Scriptwriting for Radio and TV

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Indigenous Studies, Diploma of Indigenous Studies, Bachelor of Journalism and Bachelor of Arts (Communication). Other students may apply for selection into this subject.

Students will be introduced to basic scriptwriting techniques for both radio and TV. Plot lines, character development, the writing of dialogue and genre differences will be covered. Standard layouts for both radio and TV will be taught. Students will learn how to use current computer software for scriptwriting. Students will author scripts and learn how to submit them to media organisations. Group script readings will allow students to learn to analyse and comment upon scripts and give each student a range of feedback to assist in improving their own writing.
Learning Objectives:
- demonstrate an understanding of the basic features of a radio script and a TV script;
- demonstrate awareness of differences between scripts written for a variety of common program genres;
- ability to analyse and comment upon a range of scripts;
- ability to use computer-based scriptwriting software;
- ability to write short scripts for radio and TV.
Assessment by script for 30sec ad or CSA (20%); script for 5min radio program (20%); script for 5min video piece (20%); final script project (40%).
