Indigenous Community Management and Development 2

Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students and other undergraduate students.

The purpose of this subject is to expand the students knowledge of Indigenous community based organisations to a practical working knowledge which gets inside the organisations and examines intricate internal workings and considerations. This subject is designed to produce competent community managers and workers to ensure effective and efficient community organisations. The module discusses the importance of media management from a community organisation perspective.
Learning Objectives:
- gain an understanding of the historical, political, social and cultural frameworks of Indigenous affairs (in the Australian context);
- develop a rights based terms of reference in critically analysing government policies towards Indigenous Australians;
- develop an understanding of the unique nature of Indigenous organisations;
- gain an understanding of the unique relationship between Government/s and Indigenous peoples;
- gain a knowledge of human rights and social justice and the role of advocacy in promoting Indigenous well-being;
- gain an understanding of how community development processes are applied in establishing Indigenous organisations which address Indigenous issues.
Assessment by journal (50%); major essay (30%); practical (20%).
