This subject examines the continuing effects and legacy of colonisation for Australias Indigenous people from Referendum up to the present day. Socio-economic, cultural and political factors influencing Indigenous communities today are analysed to give an overview of Indigenous Australian achievements and those institutional forces which have frustrated Indigenous Australian aspirations for self-determination. It examines the legacy of events such as the Referendum, the establishment of the Tent Embassy, the implementation of Self Determination policies, the implications of Native Title and Wik and the Reconciliation process.
Learning Objectives:
- recognise and gain an increased understanding of the diversity and complexities of Indigenous Australian culture, lifestyles and worldviews;
- develop further understanding of the impact of specific legislation and policies on Indigenous Australians from Referendum to present day;
- develop the ability to argue logically and coherently about information from diverse sources;
- refine writing skills.
Assessment by oral presentation (30%); examination (30%); essay (40%).
