Indigenous Community Management and Development 1

Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students and other undergraduate students.

This subject provides an introduction to an elective major of Community Management and Development within the Bachelor of Indigenous Studies. This introductory module will discuss how and why Indigenous community-based organisations were and are formed and their role in service delivery and advocacy.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of the historical, political, social and cultural frameworks of Indigenous Affairs (in the Australian context);
  2. develop a rights-based terms of reference in critically analysing government policies towards Indigenous Australians;
  3. develop an understanding of the unique nature of Indigenous organisations and the role of skilful media management;
  4. gain an understanding of the unique nature between Government/s and Indigenous peoples;
  5. gain a knowledge of human rights and social justice and the role of advocacy in promoting Indigenous well-being;
  6. gain an understanding of how community development processes are applied in establishing Indigenous organisations which address Indigenous issues.

Assessment by journal (40%); a 2,000 word essay (40%); oral presentation (20%).
