Indigenous Australian Worldviews 1

Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies and other undergraduate students.

This subject introduces students to the Worldviews of Indigenous Australians – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It aims to promote understanding of the complexity and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies as evidenced by the Dreaming and oral traditions and investigates the effects of culture clash that was the result of colonial practices from colonisation up to the 1967 referendum.

Learning Objectives:

  1. enable students to gain an understanding of Indigenous Australians, their history, culture and worldviews;
  2. gain an understanding of the effects of the government policies and practices from the 1880s through to 1967;
  3. communicate the results of research and thought;
  4. develop the capacity to critically evaluate the rich variety of resources available.

Assessment by journal (30%); oral presentation (30%); essay (40%).
