The subject aims to develop an understanding and appreciation of the importance of interpersonal skills in nursing practice. The focus is the beginning development of effective communication skills and helping behaviours within the context of a therapeutic interpersonal relationship.

Learning Objectives:

  1. describe the importance of effective communication in the health profession;
  2. outline the key components of the communication process;
  3. assess written and oral presentation style;
  4. identify and analyse one’s own interpersonal communication style;
  5. develop personal goals for improving communication skills.
