Socio-cultural Foundations of Human Movement

26 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials (an additional 13 hours practicals for human movement specialists and majors only). Semester 2 (Townsville campus); January/February block mode (Cairns campus).

This subject is designed to stimulate interest in the disciplines of sport sociology and sport history. It will enhance the professional and personal development of the students by increasing their perception and appreciation of the nature and role of sport in modern Australian society. Central to this subject is the notion that sport is a social agent, influenced and modified by social forces. A special emphasis will be placed on developing an understanding of the Olympic Movement – its history and impact on modern society.

Learning Objectives:

  1. explore and develop an sociological understanding of the role of sport in modern society;
  2. appreciate the influence on socio-cultural forces on sporting and leisure activities in Australia;
  3. investigate current sociological issues that pervade the world of sport and leisure in Australia;
  4. explore and develop social theory as applied to sport sociology;
  5. recognise and appreciate the impact of the Olympic Movement, both ancient and modern, on modern society.

Assessment by a two-hour examination (40%); research project (60%).
