The subject will cover major themes in North Queensland history including establishment of a capitalist economy, adaptation by European society and industry to the tropics, race relations and political problems.
Learning Objectives:
- to introduce students to advanced research skills in local history; research primary source material in archives and general libraries; use of oral history collecting skills; use of photographs and other material records;
- to assist students to acquire skills in the collation and analysis of large amounts of historical data, and the skills necessary to write a substantial historical work;
- to provide a structured overview of north Queensland history to assist with interpretation of research into more limited topics in this area.
Assessment by one seminar presentation and essay (20%); research portfolio (20%); major research essay (60%).
