Available to students enrolled in the BCommunication Design degree.

This subject will be based upon investigative research skills and will centre around proposal based work. A series of theoretical and practical workshops will be conducted relevant to proposals. Photorealist gouache rendering will be a major component. Other topics that will be explored will be: costing, client liaison, the relationship between illustration, graphic design and photography, digital printing, marketing strategies, advertising, production, planning, awareness of organisations and affiliates, generating and executing industry standard/professional images.
Learning Objectives:
- acquire essential self directed research skills;
- produce high quality professional work while developing a highly personal and imaginative individual vision;
- awareness of industry standards/practices, changing nature of illustration;
- develop a broad understanding of print processes and production and be confident in client liaison;
- acquire a working knowledge of relevant organisations and affiliates to the field of illustration;
- demonstrate an ability to cost work and develop an awareness of the economic and social constraints that determine the content of illustration.
Assessment by end of year examination (20%); three practical assignments (60%); visual journal (20%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject unless prior arrangement has been made with the lecturer, academic adviser or Head of College.
