Applied Illustration Major Study 1

13 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials, 26 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Available to students enrolled in the BCommunication Design degree.

A series of theoretical and practical workshops will be conducted exploring analytical and descriptive illustration fields such as: scientific, technical, industrial, wildlife, historical, portraiture, botanical, medical and informational. Both traditional and contemporary methods will be introduced. Emphasis will be on consolidation of skills, technical development and accuracy of observation. Studies will include: introduction to a range of media specific to the major fields of illustration; preparing artwork for publication; illustrating a specific text; realistic/photoreal rendering; concept building skills.

Learning Objectives:

  1. have a working knowledge of traditional techniques and media;
  2. become familiar with a more comprehensive range of illustration fields;
  3. produce high quality presentation visuals;
  4. develop a range of analytical and critical skills related to design practice;
  5. produce effective, full colour drawings and illustrations for publication;
  6. effective use of colour for maximum impact;
  7. further develop a personal style.

Assessment by end of year examination (20%); three practical assignments (60%); visual journal (20%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject unless prior arrangement has been made with the lecturer and academic adviser or Head of College.
