Design Fundamentals

Available to students enrolled in the BCommunication Design degree.
An introduction to visual communication design, theory and practice. Students undertaking this subject will be introduced to a range of design principles and communications practices and will begin to acquire a comprehensive design vocabulary through a series of structured problem solving activities. Students will gain experience in identifying, interpreting and analysing design problems and will explore ways of developing and extending ideas into creative and visually effective communication solutions using synectical, lateral thinking and creative research techniques.
Learning Objectives:
- understand the basic principles of effective design;
- ability to identify design problems using appropriate analytical processes;
- ability to apply a range of creative strategies and practical skills to produce innovative solutions to visual communication and design tasks;
- familiarity with a range of conceptual and analytical methodologies and ability to apply these in a diversity of ways;
- utilise a range of conventional and non-conventional media to produce effective presentations;
- awareness of cultural and social issues pertinent to design activity.
Assessment by five practical assignments (100%). Attendance of less than 80% at practical workshops will make the student ineligible for assessment unless written approval has been obtained from the lecturer and academic adviser or Head of College.
