A study of the literary and cultural movements which defined the British 19th century, encompassing a range of poems, novels and non-fiction.

Learning Objectives:

  1. broaden and intensify the literary critical skills and understanding attained by students at earlier levels, particularly where essay-writing and extra-literary issues are concerned;
  2. attain a broad knowledge of the Romantic movement in literature;
  3. acquire a broad knowledge of the Victorian period and the poetry and fiction which characterised it;
  4. engage imaginatively with the past with the aim of illuminating the present.
