Engineering in society – professional bodies, learned societies; ethics and professional responsibility.
Engineering communication – technical report writing; seminar presentations; teamwork; hand sketching; AutoCAD.
Engineering problem solving, design and management – engineering analysis; use of engineering software; open-ended problem solving; the design process; selection of alternatives; economic evaluation; project planning and resource management.
Engineering safety – occupational health and safety; duty of care; legislation; safe management of workplaces.
Learning Objectives:
- to understand the place of engineering and engineers in society;
- to undertake a significant engineering design task;
- to develop effective written, oral and pictorial communication skills.
Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
