The diagnostic-prescriptive approach to assessing and treating school students’ difficulties with learning will be critically examined. The rationale, assumptions and effectiveness of the approach and major issues associated with its use, will be explored. The approach will be compared with alternative approaches to assessing and teaching students who experience difficulty with learning.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understanding of the rationale, assumptions and effectiveness of the diagnostic-prescriptive approach to assessment and teaching;
  2. understanding of the major issues associated with the approach;
  3. awareness of alternatives to the diagnostic-prescriptive approach.

Assessment by discussion paper 1 (30%); discussion paper 2 (30%); discussion paper 3 (40%).
