Visual Arts in School Contexts

HECS Band 1

10 hours lectures, 30 hours workshops. Semester 2 (Townsville campus). External in Semester 2 for RATEP, Cairns and BEd (Professional Development) students.

Available to level 3 and final year students from all BEd programs.

The external delivery version of this subject requires access to CD-Rom and electronic communication. Students eligible to enrol in this subject via distance mode should ensure that they are able to access the necessary hardware and software. Information on distance mode requirements is available from the School of Education.

This subject is designed to further sensitise students to the visual arts as educationally essential. It will highlight the rich potential for literacy, problem-solving, expressive and creative learning through art. Effective teaching will be a major focus.

Learning Objectives:

  1. review historical discourses which have impacted on current principles and practices in Australian art education;
  2. examine the ways in which children’s drawing development has been theorised and recently challenged;
  3. become more familiar with national and state curriculum documents and teacher resource material which support quality visual arts programing;
  4. workshop a variety of art media suitable for children with emphasis on learning, management and safety;
  5. complete a short course in perceptual drawing (no previous skill level required);
  6. continue to refine and articulate a personal philosophy of art education.

Assessment by practical (approx. 50%); theoretical (approx. 50%). To be selected from: constructing a program of work, drawing assignment, workshop tasks, visual journal, participation in exhibition, mural work, community art project.
