Staff: Dr L Ashton (Art major); Dr F York (Music major) (Townsville campus); Dr P Matters (Cairns campus).

The subject introduces students to the KLA ARTS with particular emphasis on visual art and music for young children to year three. The visual art strand explores aims, concepts, strategies, art media, safety and techniques, planning for effective teaching and learning, literacy, appraising, display and evaluation. A critical approach tracks historical art education trends and recent challenges aimed at greater inclusivity. The music strand critically examines a philosophy of music education commonly found in Australian schools. The music development of young children is studied. Movement games and a singing repertoire appropriate for young children are introduced along with associated music skills. The subject may incorporate some multi-arts experiences.
