Introduction to Cultural Informatics

This subject introduces students to major technical, conceptual and organisational issues in the creation, management and publication of cultural information in digital forms. The subject analyses current and projected trends in the development of information outreach and educational programs by local, national and international cultural institutions and organisations. Students will be introduced to the theory and practice of virtual exhibition curatorship and key issues in the creation of digital surrogates of books and other print-based cultural artifacts. Students will also be introduced to key organisational, management and technical processes involved in the virtual presentation of cultural information.
Learning Objectives:
- provide students with a critical understanding of the major technical, conceptual and organisational issues in the creation, management and publication of cultural information in digital forms;
- enhance skills in critical thought;
- enhance skills in written and hypermedia-based communication.
Assessment by tutorial participation (20%); analytical review (40%); research essay (40%).
