Introduction to Literature Written in English

Semester 1 (Townsville and Cairns campus); Semester 1 flexible delivery. It will be taught through a combination of external package plus tutorials delivered weekly on campus.

Available to Tertiary Access Course students.

This subject is designed to help the student to read and appreciate the role and contribution of Indigenous literature in Australia. Whilst the main focus will be on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander works some non-Indigenous texts will be included to exemplify genres and conventions of English literature. The subject also aims to extend basic writing and speaking skills. Summary writing as well as academic approaches to writing will be incorporated into workshop activities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. reflect on what constitutes literature and identify ways in which literary genres and conventions, as well as social, historical and political conditions have influenced the production of Indigenous literature;
  2. engage and become familiar with a range of print and film texts applying knowledge and understanding of literary genres and techniques in the appraisal of selected texts;
  3. critically analyse and interpret a range of texts demonstrating skills of academic writing as well as refinement of orall presentation skills.

Assessment by two written assignments (40%); seminar presentation (20%); journal (15%); film critique/review (15%); attendance and participation (10%).
