Introduction to Chemistry 2
Townsville
HECS Band 2
39 hours lectures, 39 hours tutorials, 10 hours laboratory work. Semester 2.
Available to Tertiary Access Course students.
This is the second of two semesters of chemistry covering the core syllabus for years 11 and 12 as outlined by the Queensland Department of Education. The completion of both semesters will provide the student with a sound understanding of senior chemistry suitable for entry into chemical studies at a tertiary level. Chemical theory is supplemented by laboratory experience in experiments relevant to these topics.
Learning Objectives:
- comprehend the kinetics of reactions, energy and heat capacity based on thermochemical principles, including exothermic and endothermic reactions;
- understand the importance of water as a solvent and the properties of solutions in general;
- understand the various structures of hydrocarbons: rules for nomenclature, origin, manufacture, major functional groups and organic products, especially those basic to biological systems;
- participate in laboratory experiments and become familiar with equipment and analyse chemical reactions, interpreting and writing up experiments.
Assessment by laboratory reports (20%); three assignments (30%); attendance and participation (10%); examination (40%).
