The Practice of Cultural Heritage Management

This subject offers a practical overview of the process of cultural heritage management. It introduces students to the notion of heritage values which are used (both nationally and internationally) to define and assess the cultural significance of heritage places. The subject will also take students through some of the administrative processes which underpin successful management from conducting meetings and record-keeping through to the analysis of information and the production of reports. It will also introduce students to a range of concepts surrounding the presentation of heritage places to the public. It will examine legal and ethical issues surrounding this, the role and nature of interpretation and the application of a range of media (including the World Wide Web) in relation to this.
Learning Objectives:
- develop an understanding of the processes involved in the identification, assessment and management of cultural heritage places;
- an understanding of the administrative processes that are central to successful cultural heritage management;
- have an understanding of the range of activities and therefore reporting that are undertaken by cultural heritage managers;
- develop an understanding of the purpose of public interpretation in relation to heritage places, including a range of issues associated with this;
- develop an understanding of the range of media through which interpretation can be achieved.
Assessment by written assignments (100%).
