Anthropology in Practice

This subject introduces students to the practice of the discipline of anthropology. Major topic areas covered include the nature of social and cultural anthropology, cultural diversity, kinship, politics and religion. Anthropological concepts and theories are introduced in the context of their practical application in culturally diverse settings.
Learning Objectives:
- acquire ability to identify issues and subject areas associated with anthropology;
- understand and appreciate other human societies and cultures;
- critically question many assumptions concerning ones own society;
- identify areas where an anthropological perspective may improve the practice of human service oriented professions;
- communicate anthropological ideas and concepts as they relate to understanding the delivery of human services in culturally diverse settings.
Assessment by two essays of not more than 2000 words (25% each); five assignments comprising multiple choice quizzes, short answer assignments and Internet exercises where appropriate (50%).
