Introduction to Women’s Studies

Prerequisites: Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline

13 lecture/seminars or the equivalent in mixed mode delivery. Flexible delivery first and second semester.

An interdisciplinary survey of current feminist research and theoretical issues in women’s studies. Topics may include: women and work, health, education, social welfare and law; rural, migrant and NESB women; women of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage; women in literature; women in history; women and development.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to demonstrate understanding of historical and contemporary social structures and processes which create particular gendered regimes in public and private life;
  2. to demonstrate understanding of various theoretical frameworks with which to analyse women’s various positions, opportunities, and achievements in public and private life.

Assessment by research paper (2,500 - 3,000 words) (70%); seminar presentation or reflective journal (30%).
