Training Primary Healthcare Workers

This subject examines the international and Australian experience of training primary health workers. Topics covered include: adult education, cultural diversity in training, learning styles, instructional design, techniques for assessing literacy and numeracy, writing educational objectives, assessment techniques and evaluating educational programs, teaching in low resource settings, diverse and interesting learning activities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. insight into primary health care and primary health care workers history, thought and practice;
  2. knowledge of a range of adult learning and experiential learning approaches;
  3. develop knowledge of special learning considerations in cross cultural, low resource settings and non-English speaking settings;
  4. plan an education program for a primary health care setting;
  5. become familiar with a range of innovative teaching methods.

Assessment by in-class assignments, presentations, post-course project.
