Applied Social Science in Tropical Medicine

The application of social science to tropical medicine is discussed, together with the definitions and concepts of health, disease and illness. The contribution of medical sociology, medical anthropology, geography, ecology, epidemiology and health economics are discussed. Theoretical models are presented. Social science research methods, study designs analysis and health program evaluation are introduced. Specific case studies include malaria, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and hookworm infection.
