Technical Proficiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers

This subject is designed to address the written and electronic communication needs of students enrolled in Indigenous health programs. Specifically, it will provide underpinning foundation knowledge and skills for computer and word processing functions and effective health reporting skills for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are working, or who aim to work in the health industry, as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers.

Topics include industry specific communication skills with particular emphasis on writing skills, computing skills, electronic communications.

Learning Objectives:

  1. examine common forms of report writing within health related discourse – workplace and academic environments;
  2. understand the foundations, styles and purposes of written communications for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers;
  3. demonstrate skills in writing for varied audiences and/or clientele;
  4. demonstrate foundation skills in analysing and establishing the framework of data and information;
  5. review and analyse information from health related genres to prepare and draft written work;
  6. understand the physical structure and operating environment of computers;
  7. demonstrate knowledge and practical skills in basic word processing;
  8. demonstrate skills in the use of electronic communication in the form of email and internet applications and searches.

Assessment by report writing (50%); computing (30%); electronic communication (20%).
