Health Education and Promotion for Health Workers

Available to students enrolled in the Diploma of Indigenous Health.

This subject is designed to introduce students to the competencies involved in the development of health education and health promotion activities and programs. Students will be introduced to the principles and theory of health education and health promotion and to the processes of health promotion program planning, design, implementation and evaluation. The theories, barriers and techniques involved in knowledge and behaviour change will be examined. The subject is designed to enable students to develop the skills necessary to address identified health issues within their own working context and thereby gain skills in the design of media resources, design and delivery of health education sessions and how to practically plan, design, implement and evaluate a health promotion program.

Learning Objectives:

  1. describe the principles of health promotion outlined in the Ottawa Charter;
  2. identify ways in which health promotion and education are relevant to the student’s professional discipline;
  3. analyse the relationship between health education and health promotion;
  4. discuss theories, barriers and techniques involved in knowledge and behaviour change;
  5. demonstrate an ability to identify specific health needs in the student’s community;
  6. demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills in the processes of planning, designing, implementing, evaluating and sustaining health promotion programs;
  7. critically analyse the role, quality and range of health education media;
  8. understand the production and evaluation of health education media;
  9. develop a health education resource for a defined audience;
  10. demonstrate an ability to apply all of the above skills in their own working environment.

Assessment by written assignments, class presentations and workbooks. Some assessment is required to be handed in after completion of the block period. Tutorial attendance is required.
