39 lectures, 10 tutorials, 40 hours practicals. First semester.

Injury epidemiology (the occurrence, distribution and types of injury). Dehydration, heat stress and ion balance. Overuse injuries. Principles of injury prevention. Muscle and tendon injury. Bone and joint injury. Overtraining syndrome. Illness in sport, asthma, diabetes, arthritis, skin cancer and infections. Drugs in sport. Screening athletes. Pain. On field assessment. Emergency procedures, CPR.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to understand the fundamental basis of injury and illness resulting from exercise and sport;
  2. to be able to evaluate and advise on risk factors relating to exercise and sport.

Assessment by a three-hour end-of-semester examination (55%); on-course tests and assignments (45%). This subject requires completion of Queensland Ambulance Senior First Aid course or evidence of current Senior First Aid.
