Vocational Health and Safety

39 lectures, 12 hours workshop, 12 hours field. First semester.

This subject covers the curriculum for the WHSO Stage 1 (core) and Stage 2 (Services Industry) specification. Stage 1 includes Workplace Health and Safety Legislation; accident investigation; hazard evaluation, risk assessment; workplace health and hygiene; safety officers, representatives and committees; manual handling. Stage 2 includes health and safety policies and procedures for non-employees; health and safety analysis and costs; health and safety auditing; health and safety planning; communicable diseases; regulation provisions; hazardous substances; hearing conservation; topics from ergonomics; shift work; stress management; substance misuse; smoke-free workplace; interpersonal and communication skills; diving.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to understand the importance of work place health and safety and its effect on human performance;
  2. to be able to formulate and solve problems in this area;
  3. to develop report writing skills.

Assessment by a three-hour end of semester examination (70%); on-course tutorial assignments (15%); practicals/workshops (15%).
