Health Promotion

Available to MPsych or DPsych students or other suitably qualified persons with the permission of the course coordinator.

This subject provides students with a conceptual and practical base for the design, implementation and evaluation of health promotion programs. Students will be introduced to social cognitive models of health behaviour and the stages of change model as explanatory guiding frameworks for matching health promotion strategies to psychological and social environmental factors. National health promotion programs will be discussed and critically evaluated. Students will acquire skills which will enable them to work with individuals, families, schools and whole communities in promoting healthful behaviour and lifestyles.
Learning Objectives:
- provide students with skills which will enable them to work in multidisciplinary health care settings;
- introduce students to health promotion interventions involving development, implementation and evaluation of process, impact and outcome.
Assessment by program development (60%); program evaluation (40%).
