Methods of Intervention 2

Available to MPsych or DPsych students or by permission of the course coordinator.

Students will acquire knowledge and training in intervention strategies that may be used in the prevention and treatment of psychological problems, as well as coping with or preventing physical illness. A range of interventions will be considered together with their application to different problems and situations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to become proficient at employing basic counselling skills;
  2. to become proficient at basic cognitive psychotherapeutic techniques;
  3. to become proficient at basic relaxation and desensitisation techniques;
  4. to gain experience presenting case details orally;
  5. to gain experience presenting case details in written format;
  6. to become familiar with ethical principles affecting delivery of psychological interventions.
  7. to become proficient at evaluating different treatment techniques and selecting the most appropriate for given problem;
  8. to become proficient at planning appropriate treatment programs for different types of problems, including in areas of health and medical psychology.

Assessment by demonstration of clinical skills (40%); written treatment plans (30%); written examinations (30%).
