Learning, Memory and Cognition

This subject provides students with an in-depth introduction to key theories and concepts in learning and cognitive psychology. It covers classic and contemporary viewpoints and tracks the development of these areas and their major contributions to the discipline.

Learning Objectives:

  1. consolidate knowledge of the basic learning and cognitive phenomena and gain some understanding of the theories which attempt to explain the principles by which an organism learns;
  2. appreciate how model building occurs within psychology, with particular reference to models of learning, attention, memory and language;
  3. develop skills and experience in the testing of theories and propositions regarding various aspects of human learning and cognitive functioning;
  4. understand the implications of the convergence in theoretical approaches to learning and memory.

Assessment by practical report (30%); group presentation (30%); final examination (40%).
