Physics of our World 3: Atmospheric Physics

Cairns

Prerequisites: (PH2010 or SF2732) MA2000

26 lectures, 13 practice classes, 15 hours practicals. Second semester by flexible delivery.

Staff: Dr R Robson.

Global climate models, stability, practical use of the aerological diagram, winds and weather systems, micrometeorology of crops and vegetation, dispersion of pollutants, tropical cyclones.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to learn about the physical properties of the atmosphere;
  2. to appreciate climate as a problem in physics;
  3. to understand how the laws of physics govern atmospheric motion;
  4. to understand the physical factors governing large and small scale weather systems;
  5. to understand the crucial nature of physical processes for life on the surface.

Assessment by one three-hour end of semester examination; performance in practical sessions; assignments.
