Introduction to Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Science 2

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Pharmacy.

This subject is a continuation of PC1004. The student will be introducted to the importance of effective written communication in the practice of pharmacy and the special needs of certain groups in this regard. An introduction to finding pharmaceutical resources, data management and statistical analysis will be provided.

Students will also develop an understanding of the systems of weights and measures, equipment, calculations and techniques used in preparation of extemporaneous pharmaceutical formulations. The packaging, labeling, transportation and storage of pharmaceuticals, outlining the unique needs of rural and remote areas will be explored.

Learning Objectives:

  1. acquire a knowledge of available pharmaceutical resources in the library and world wide web and how to access them;
  2. demonstrate practical extemporaneous dispensing and the related written and verbal communication skills;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of basic statistics and data analysis, including an ability to recognize when particular techniques are appropriate;
  4. discuss the appropriate packaging, labeling, transportation and storage of pharmaceuticals;
  5. outline the principles of pharmaceutics;
  6. outline the principles of basic pharmacokinetics and its application to professional pharmacy practice.

Assessment by a three-hour written examination (60%); laboratory attendance and reports (10%); extemporaneous dispensing practical examination (30%). Other assessment details should be checked with the academic adviser in Pharmacy.
