Management and Organisational Skills

Prerequisites: OT1001 or professional experience at discretion of HoS

26 lectures, 26 workshops, 36 hours fieldwork placement. Second semester.

Available to level 1 Occupational Therapy students.

The subject will examine current theories and practice of management, leadership, financial management, marketing, public sector employment, training requirements, accreditation procedures within the framework of national and state legislation for occupational therapy service delivery in urban and rural areas. The need for ongoing professional development will be identified. Students may be required to undertake clinical placement in a facility away from the campus at which they are enrolled, at their own expense.

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate a knowledge of the processes of management, leadership and supervision of health service and occupational therapy service delivery;
  2. describe strategies for time and stress management and for working professionally as part of a team;
  3. apply knowledge on professional accountability (including service accreditation, evaluation and financial accountability) to the provision of occupational therapy services;
  4. demonstrate knowledge of legislation regulating the practice of occupational therapy;
  5. demonstrate the ability to market occupational therapy services or products.

Assessment by assignments: personal management schedule (15%); marketing strategy (40%); fieldwork diary (20%); work book (25%). Successful completion of fieldwork education placement (pass/fail basis).
