Advanced Surgical Nursing

40 hours flexible delivery. First semester.

Available to registered nurses enrolled in postgraduate courses in the School of Nursing Sciences.

This subject focuses on the delivery of advanced nursing care to surgical clients within the current health context. Contemporary issues that will be discussed include the continuum of care, clinical pathways, diagnostic related groups and the role of the specialist surgical nurse. In conjunction with these contemporary issues the content will include pain management, wound management, discharge planning, pre and post operative care and the care of a high acuity client. The learning experience will be directed via readings, activities, critical thinking exercises, reflective journalling and case studies.

Learning Objectives:

  1. discuss contemporary issues and trends in clinical management;
  2. discuss how the continuum of care provides an holistic approach to health delivery for surgical clients;
  3. perform a comprehensive assessment on a surgical client within the clinical environment.
