Assessment of Altered Health Status in the Aged

Flexible delivery. First semester.

Applicants are required to be registered nurses; to hold a degree in nursing or a related discipline; or to have gained entry by exception at the discretion of the Head of School.

This subject will introduce the student to nursing assessment of the major physiological and emotional disruptions to health status associated with ageing. Critical exemplars in case study format will be used to illustrate symptomatology, client presentation and fundamental assessment skills.

Learning Objectives:

  1. identify major disruptions to the physical and emotional health of the aged client;
  2. complete a systematic and comprehensive assessment of the health status of an aged client in the physical, psychological, social, emotional and functional domains;
  3. utilise a range of clinical tools to facilitate accurate and reliable assessment and reporting of health status;
  4. explore issues in the assessment and interviewing of aged clients, their families and significant others which may impact the conduct and outcome of assessment.
