Contemporary Issues in Critical Care Nursing

Available to registered nurses enrolled in postgraduate diploma or master of nursing studies.

This subject focuses on current issues relevant to critical care nurses. Students will critically analyse issues relevant to their practice, such as: specialisation in nursing, competency standards, the role of the nurse in a multi-disciplinary team, evolution of the nurse practitioner in Australia, advancing technology and crisis intervention and stress management.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop an understanding of the established competency standards for critical care nurse specialists in relation to current practice;
  2. as a reflective practitioner, examine and critique one’s own critical care practice;
  3. evaluate the role of the nurse as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and describe the evolution of the nurse practitioner in relation to critical care;
  4. outline principles related to critical incident stress debriefing and stress management in critical care environments.

On-course assessment (100%).
