Diagnostic Tropical Microbiology

The subject concentrates on the advanced issues of diagnostic microbiology particularly relevant to medical laboratory science in the tropics. Both clinical and scientific issues of specialist tropical diseases in bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology will be covered. Public health issues and diagnosis of human parasitology will be studied in detail. The practical component of the subject will cover advanced techniques of assay development.

Learning Objectives:

  1. become familiar with clinical, epidemiology and diagnosis of the microbiology of tropical medicine;
  2. develop advanced knowledge in diagnostic assay development;
  3. develop an interest in issues surrounding medical laboratory science in a tropical/developing world environment.

Assessment by theory examination (50%); practical examination (35%); assignment (15%).
