Management of Negotiations and Employee Relations

Prerequisites: 18 level 1 units or permission of HoS

26 lectures, 12 tutorials. Second semester. Also offered at Holmes College in Sydney and Melbourne, first and second semester and January/February intensive block mode.

Topics include: commencing and sustaining the negotiation process; preparing negotiation strategies, methods and tactics; intra- and inter-group negotiations; dispute resolution and mediation; management goals and strategic negotiations; employee relations mediation, arbitration and negotiation in industrialised economies; the process and outcomes of industry and workplace collective bargaining.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to understand the nature and process of negotiations;
  2. to identify different negotiation strategies;
  3. to learn to devise negotiation strategies, methods and tactics;
  4. to understand how negotiations are used to reshape the relationship between management, employees and unions.
