Advanced Fluid Mechanics

Townsville

Prerequisites: CS3008

39 lectures, 21 tutorials, 18 hours practicals. First semester.

Available to level 4 mechanical engineering students.

Potential flow/boundary layer concept, laminar and turbulent boundary layers, separation. Flow over immersed bodies: drag and lift, aerofoils, flow induced vibration, aircraft performance. Measurement techniques. Computational fluid dynamics. Analysis of pipe and duct networks. Pressure transients in pipes.Turbomachinery: water turbines and pumps, cavitation, pump selection. Fans and compressors. Compressible flow: equation of state, isentropic flow in nozzles and ducts.

Learning Objectives:

  1. computation of the drag and lift forces acting on bodies in external flow;
  2. flow and pressure drop in pipe networks;
  3. pressure transients and water hammer;
  4. specification of pumps and fans for use in flow systems;
  5. analysis of simple compressible flow problems.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
